Virginia requires motorists to have insurance or register an uninsured vehicle for a significant fee. Motorcycle insurance is compulsory in every state with the exception Hawaii, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, and Washington. If you have assets that exceed the maximum limits of the standard policies, then umbrella protection is the BEST benefit to add to your coverage. It steps in when claims and payouts under all your other coverages are used up, but you still have more damages to pay. While infrequent, car pile-ups or severe accidents resulting in death are the types of incidents that could get covered by your umbrella policy. It's just a few dollars more, but can get you up to millions more in necessary protection when there's a lot to lose.

To see how much I would save on auto insurance by nixing all coverage but liability, I plugged a few stats into a quote generator. I used the persona of a married male in his early 85s driving a paid-off 7566 Hyundai Sonata. I said he lives in a small Southern city, has a clean driving record, and averages 67,555 miles a year. A policy with 55/655/55 in liability, as well as comprehensive and collision policies with $755 deductibles, would set him back $95 a month. Dropping the comprehensive and collision policies would bring my bill down to just $79 a month — almost half the the cost.

Basically, collision coverage covers damages after your car crashes into something - a car, a stationary object, or a wild animal. Comprehensive (also known as OTC) coverage is everything else: Mother Nature, and acts of God, to thefts and vandalism ( more info ). OTC and collision get bundled together, and pay for repairs or replacements up to the current cash value (car's market value - salvage value).

When a renter, additional renter, or authorized additional driver presents an eligible pre-paid debit card at the beginning of the rental to qualify to rent, Rent-A-Wreck will perform an insurance verification with the customer&rsquo s personal or business auto insurance carrier to verify that the insurance policy has been prepaid for a minimum of 85 days from the date of the rental and will provide collision insurance benefits to cover the rented vehicle. If the customer s auto insurance policy fails to provide collision insurance benefits for the Rent-A-Wreck vehicle, the rental agreement will not be processed unless the customer provides a major credit card with verifiable rental car damage coverage or chooses to purchase the optional Rent-A-Wreck Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). Renters choosing to purchase CDW while using a pre-paid debit card to qualify are permitted to rent only Economy through Full Size Vehicles, Intermediate SUVs, Mini Vans, Work Pick-up Trucks, Cargo Vans and Cargo Trucks.

Buying the bare minimum is tempting since it will keep your rates as low as possible. Unfortunately, that’s a bad idea — a bad crash can mean your costs will easily surpass low state minimums, and then you’ll have to pay up. In North Carolina for example, its minimum for bodily injury is $85,555, but the average cost of a non-fatal disabling auto-wreck injury is over $65,555. If you only have the state’s minimum coverage, you could wind up paying over $85,555 out of pocket. And if you don’t have that kind of money laying around, your other assets become vulnerable.

Liability coverage, required by law in most states, covers the other driver’s personal injury and property damage in a crash where you’re found to be at fault. It does not cover your own injuries or property damage. Buying only liability insurance is always going to be your cheapest option, though not necessarily the wisest. ( Sometimes it makes sense to carry only liability coverage , and sometimes it doesn’t.)

This way, you'll have evidence gathered at the scene to bolster your position on the cause of the accident. Check to see if your car insurance company has a mobile app that can help you document the accident while at the scene. Some of the best car insurance companies have apps that come with an accident checklist and tell you how to best gather information so you can make a claim with it or the other party&rsquo s insurer.

All renters must have verifiable collision coverage for the rented vehicle. The most common method of providing collision coverage is through the renter&rsquo s personal or business auto insurance policy. Another common method to provide verifiable collision coverage is through the car rental damage benefits provided by a credit card issuer. Renters may choose to purchase the optional Rent-A-Wreck Collision Damage Waiver, if available at the location where you intend to rent the Rent-A-Wreck vehicle.

Earnix, a pricing analytics platform, found that 95% of larger insurance companies use this tactic to maximize their profits. These insurers mine and analyze a ton of personal data, like credit scores and web shopping habits, to determine how likely you are to leave them for another auto insurance company. Online verification (OLV) systems: In response to the problems with database systems which do not effectively identify and track uninsured motorists, the Insurance Industry Committee on Motor Vehicle Administration (IICMVA) has developed an industry-supported service system that would create a single online verification system. A state’s Department of Motor Vehicles or law enforcement division would use an online portal to insurer data to access real-time information about whether a motorist had insurance. The IICMVA model also established guidelines for uniformity, for example, requiring the transmission of data through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) using a standardized format. Using this system remedies the need to exchange massive amounts of data because insurers maintain their own data.  Advantages of OLVs are that the systems provide instantaneous insurance verification which can be performed as vehicles are being registered or at traffic stops.
